The resort
Wonderful white sand beaches are ideal for walking, sunbathing and relaxing. The first holiday visitors came here in 1817, the first wicker beach chair was invented here. Warnemünde beach remains extremely popular today and the water quality of the Baltic Sea is very high in spite of the many bathers. Anyone holidaying here can experience all the sea's moods, from calm water through slightly rough seas to foaming surf. But Warnemünde doesn't just offer white sand, clean water, crying gulls and the salt tang of the sea. Typical of the resort are little houses, narrow and winding streets, exquisite boutiques, alternating with cafés, bars and restaurants. The Alter Strom is just the place for a stroll, while bathers, holidaymakers and locals throng on the promenade. From the lighthouse you can let your gaze wander over Warnemünde or watch the ferries and freighters sailing out of port. |

The Hanseatic city of Rostock
"Roztoc" is mentioned for the first time by a historian in 1160. At the end of the 14th century, 12,000 people were already living in the town. Rostock was one of the first and most important Hanseatic towns. The city of Rostock is large, but not so as to lose track of things. All the sights are in the city centre, within the old city walls. Here there are old gates and churches, wonderful gabled houses, the town hall, the walls and the university – or the theatre.
The Rostock Volkstheater has made a name for itself with plays, opera, ballet, musicals and operetta. The programme offers something for every taste. But what makes Rostock so unique is the seaside resort of Warnemünde, surely the best known and most popular part of the town. Even the locals aren’t quite sure whether Rostock is a city with its own seaside resort, or Warnemünde a seaside resort with its own city. |
